Former Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was recently let go by Turkish side Besiktas, once opened up about his sudden and surprising exit from Anfield.

The 32-year-old didn't feature in any of the first six matches of the new season for Besiktas and rumours began to circulate in July that his contract with the club was set to be terminated.

Oxlade-Chamberlain had a six-year stint at Anfield after moving from Arsenal in 2017 for £35 million.

He departed the club as a free agent in the summer of 2023 with an emotional social media statement.

However, following months of silence leading up to the 2022/23 season, which was the final year of his contract, Oxlade-Chamberlain claimed he was only informed of his departure three days before it was officially announced to the public.

In an interview with The Athletic, the former Arsenal and Southampton star was asked about his departure from Liverpool.

"It was never said," he said.

It was just… the silence was enough to know what the situation was.”

While his stint with the Reds was plagued by injuries, he still managed to rack up 146 appearances and won both the Premier League and the Champions League.

However, Oxlade-Chamberlain admits he knew it was unlikely he would be offered a new deal by the Reds, but he squashed any suggestion that he had fallen out with ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

He continued: "I want to be the best person to everyone around me and a good person to have around the lads, the staff, stuff like that.

But that's how it goes."

Despite being informed with merely days to spare, Oxlade-Chamberlain, alongside Milner, Firmino and Keita, received recognition on the Anfield turf during the final home fixture of the 2022/2023 campaign.

A Liverpool statement at the time said: "We wish Roberto, Naby, James, Alex and their families the very best for the future.
